THE ROLE OF EXTENSION SYSTEMS AND GIS TECHNOLOGY IN FORMATION AND PREDICTING GLOBAL AGRICULTURAL POLICY: PRECISION AGRICULTURE IS COMING FAST

Abstract


In this short paper we will review the development of the GIS and sensing technologies, discuss several applications that have great potential for the development for agronomic, logistics and marketing applications, possibilities for Extension and provide an assessment of the major potential of these methods if adopted, on a global agriculture basis, for improving food production and distribution.  There are barriers to global adoption of the technologies resulting in these decision aids, but the rewards are significant enough that we see the barriers falling in the 10 – 20 year future.  Universities should recognize these likely changes in technology and move to take advantage of them.  And, if the decision aids are developed and adopted, there will be major increases in yields, reductions in the use of fertilizers and pesticides, reductions in costs of agricultural production, and a changed structure of spot and futures commodity markets within a relatively short period.
