USING A HIGH QUALITY SILAGE INOCULANT TO INCREASE THE VALUE OF FERMENTED FEEDS – A FARMS LARGEST OPERATIONAL ASSET

L. Jones, D. Morse

Abstract

The dairy industry in Ukraine and other nearby countries is undergoing a major transformation driven by increasing consumer demand for milk. More milk production and higher milk quality is needed. Many factors are involved in achieving the higher production, but the two major factors are cow genetics and feed quality. This paper discusses feed on modern dairy farms, specifically fermented forages fed as silage and the goal of preserving feed quality by managing for minimal storage losses. Silages are the largest operational asset on a large dairy farm, and therefore present the largest economic opportunity for gains or losses.
