BROWN LEAF RUST (PUCCINIA RECONDITA ROB. EX DESM. F. SP. TRITICI) – DANGEROUS DISEASE OF WINTER WHEAT: SPREAD AND DEVELOPMENT IN UKRAINE FORESTRY STEPPE

Abstract


The results on monitoring of wheat brown leaf rust development and distribution in Forestry Steppe of Ukraine and diagnostics of pathogen according to sporulation morphology are presented.

Brown leaf rust Pucciniarecondita Rob. exDesm. f. sp. tritici – one of the most common diseases of winter wheat, its share of rust disease is more than 16% and in Ukraine is developing mainly from incomplete cycle.

Growing season weather conditions were not favourable for the development of Pucciniarecondita and the first symptoms of the disease, appeared in June in the phase of milk ripeness. Spread of the disease in the studied cultivars were: the phase of milk ripeness 38,0%-45,5%, in the phase of milk – wax ripeness 100% and disease progression of 1,0-2,5% and 5,5-9,0%.

Of the studied varieties, which are characterized as resistant to leaf rust disease development on grade National was on average twice as high than grades Yelyk and Stan. However, the rate of accumulation of infectious capacity at this grade was 1,5-2,0 times.
