Exploring the biophysical potential of dryland afforestation on degraded lands in the downstream of the Amu Darya River, Uzbekistan

Abstract


This paper reports the preliminary results of an ongoing study investigating the biophysical potential of afforesting the degraded irrigated croplands in the downstream catchment of the Amu Darya River, Uzbekistan. The study combined (i) field experiments to evaluate the establishment of promising tree species on deserted croplands and (ii) analyses of satellite imagery to map spatial trends in land degradation as an indication of areas which can be potentially targeted by afforestation. These results contribute in defining viable options for dryland afforestation to mitigate land degradation and contribute to carbon sequestration.
