POTENTIALS OF FOREST BIOMASS FOR ENERGETIC USE IN UKRAINE

Abstract


Results of national assessment of theoretical and technical energy potentials of forest biomass in Ukraine that were obtained in a framework of Biomass Energy Europe project (BEE) are presented. It has been found that almost 35% of all the forest biomass possible for energy use is located in the Polissya zone, up to 30% – in the Carpathians and in the Forest-Steppe zone, only about 5% – in Steppe zone. Forests of the Carpathians are characterized by highest density of energy biomass – 457,2 kJ·(m2)-1, in other forest growing zones this index is considerably lower: Polissya – 255,8 kJ·(m2)-1, Forest-Steppe – 144,2 kJ·(m2)-1, Steppe – 36,5 kJ·(m2)-1. Validation of applicability of the Harmonized European methodology for assessment of potentials of forest biomass by carrying out a parallel assessment with use of an alternative stand-wise method is performed.
